READING AND LANGUAGE SKILLS TEACHER
The teacher will guide middle and upper school students in developing a knowledge base of the structure of the English language and in developing strategies for applying these skills to increasingly difficult reading and writing tasks.
Job Description The teacher will: ·
- Teach reading: syllable patterns, morphology, fluency, and comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and writing skills in a small group or individual setting.
- Administer and/or interpret language skill and psychological testing.
- Develop and implement individualized instructional plans for each student.
- Use a diagnostic/prescriptive approach in remediating basic language skills.
- Utilize Orton-Gillingham (multi-sensory) techniques and strategies.
- Facilitate ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including written reports and parent conferences in accordance with the school calendar.
- Communicate with academic teachers concerning appropriate academic accommodations and learning styles of students.
- Serve as the faculty advisor to 2-4 students.
- Facilitate and participate in student life activities in the upper school.
- Participate in the school's extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring programs.
- Perform other supervisory duties as assigned.
Requirements: The ideal candidate must possess:
- A strong interest in working closely with middle and upper school students to improve their language skills and learn to successfully meet academic challenge.
- A master's degree as a Reading Specialist or in Learning Disabilities and/or working towards Virginia certification in learning disabilities is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- A strong desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.

UPPER SCHOOL HISTORY TEACHER
Job Description: The teacher will:
- Teach small classes (6-8 students) most likely including World History 9 and American History 10.
- Serve as the faculty advisor to 2-4 students.
- Contribute to other aspects of the school's extra-curricular program including one or more of the following: athletics, Physical Education, technology, and Practical and Fine Arts.
- Facilitate ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including formal written reports in accordance with the school calendar.
- Participate in the school's extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
- Perform other supervisory duties as assigned.
Requirements: The ideal candidate must possess:
- A major in History (minimum, B.A.) to include a strong background in both American and World History.
- Excellent oral and writen communication skills.
- A strong interest in exploring varied instructional strategies and in working with students who have struggled in previous school placements.
- Virginia certification in Social Studies or a willingness to work toward certification.
- Previous teaching experience or work with adolescents.
- A desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.
