Our Story | Building a Pathway
The New Community School (TNCS) started in 1974 when parents with dyslexic children wanted an option for their bright kids to continue their education in programs specifically built to help dyslexic students. TNCS began in classrooms at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with 24 students in grades 7-10. The following year, the school doubled in size, moved to Ginter Park Baptist Church, and added an 11th grade.
In 1981, TNCS moved to its current location and established its campus on Richmond’s North Side. “Willowbrook,” now named Massey Hall, served as the main academic building, along with the adjacent science labs, the cottage, and the barn. In 1993, the school expanded to add a 6th grade, and later, in 2013, the school expanded again to add the first 5th grade class.
From its humble beginnings in a church basement, TNCS now consists of 10 academic and administrative buildings and a state-of-the-art athletic and wellness facility.
